Overwatch took the multiplayer gaming scene by storm since its release in 2016. Due to its successful gameplay and continual support, the game garnered a wide audience in a short time. Last year, Blizzard rewarded its community’s loyalty and support with a grand announcement—the release of Overwatch 2. It surely has been a while since fans received any additional information about the much-anticipated game, but not for long!
Overwatch League’s Vice President Jon Spector took to YouTube recently to discuss updates regarding the future of the season. Season 4’s beginning was partially revealed, hinting at a Spring 2021 date—later than usual. According to Spector, this delay from its usual February date can be attributed to pandemic-related issues. Fans, however, have started brewing a handful of theories.
Assuming that Overwatch 2 will, in fact, be released in 2021, the most logical step to follow would be a release before the beginning of the season. Keep in mind the Overwatch season lasts until Fall. Thus, it’d make no sense for teams to switch from one game to another midseason or stick to the first installment while the rest of the community thrives on the updated second installment. Fans speculate that if this is the case, the delay will give players from all around the world the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the new game before being launched into competitive gameplay. Either that or Overwatch is being pushed away for a Winter 2021 release.
While everything so far is mostly theories and speculations, loyal fans of Overwatch are confident in an early 2021 release. Official statements regarding the game have been scarce—the only thing we know for sure is that Overwatch 2 is currently in development. We had our first look at the initial trailer of the game back in November. Story missions and new multiplayer modes were the stand-out features, but the same set of characters was disappointing. We can only hope 2021 is set for a good start and will finally grant us the much-awaited instalment.
