As reported last week, Blast recently got involved in the Valorant Ignition Series, serving as host to a Twitch Invitational. This would be the last showdown in the Ignition Series, and only the best European teams were invited. Four prominent teams were invited– FunPlus Phoenix, G2 Esports, Ninjas in Pyjamas and Team Liquid. While the four teams are arguably the best in the current European eSports scene, the favoritism for G2 was evident.
G2 had so far wined five consecutive invitationals. This, of course, had enhanced its reputation and helped settle their tittle as the current best Valorant team in the world. The fact that G2 blissfully dominated the three-day tournament came to no surprise.
The route to the final had bumps along the way, of course. After defeating FunPlus Phoenix 2-0 in the best-of-three series, the latter team opted for a rematch. Taking the opportunity to clear their name, FPP gave G2 an admirable battle. This took the tournament to the final game—marking the first time where an opposing team has secured two matches in a best-of-five final against the fear-inducing G2 team.
The final game was decisive for G2. The teams went back and forth with neither of them getting a clear advantage. It wasn’t anybody’s game until the last, final match. FunPlus Phoenix could’ve smelled victory, aching to touch success. But G2 proved to be too big of an obstacle to clear. In the final moments, G2 managed to win a leverage of 2 points, concluding the match is a tight 13-11. Ardis ‘ardiis’ Svarenieks of G2 was awarded the MVP honor, due to his outstanding performance during the match.
The final Ignition Series match cemented G2’s positiong as the “Kings Of Europe”, as G2 Mixwell generously called his team via Twitter. Aditionally to the incredible boost in reputation and prestige amidst the Valorant community, G2 also received a prize of over €50,000.
G2’s success was met with overwhelmingly positive reactions from the gaming community in general. Both fans and professional players took to congratulate the team through their different social media outlets.
G2 remains unbeaten in Valorant, but their eSport reigns cover all currently prominent games in the eSports Scene. As kindly explained in this tweet, G2-s victories cover League of Legends, Rainbow 6 Siege, and of course, Valorant. We can only expect to see how G2 continues to surprise us and take over the eSports scene.
